American Heart Association names Everett Community College a Fit-Friendly worksite

EVERETT, Wash. – Everett Community College has been recognized as a platinum-level Fit-Friendly worksite by the American Heart Association.

“Along with offering the highest quality education, we are committed to the healthiest workplace possible for everyone at all of our locations,” EvCC President David Beyer said.

EvCC was one of 18 higher education organizations nationwide and the only college in Washington to receive the award this year. The college also received a worksite innovation award from the American Heart Association. 

EvCC’s employee Wellness Team, formed in 2013, promotes a healthy worksite culture through nutrition, physical fitness and continuing education. 

College employees can enroll in free fitness classes, participate in the annual pedometer challenge, eat healthy options at the college’s café, go on employee walks, take EvCC classes at a reduced rate and more.

Employees say the wellness program is making a difference.

“The EvCC wellness program was the catalyst for major changes in my routine. Their ‘Climb Every Building’ challenge in 2014 got me walking in a way I never had before. Two years later, I'm still walking and 55 pounds lighter,” said EvCC Medical Transcription and Editing instructor Betsy Stam.  

The American Heart Association uses the Fit-Friendly Worksites program as a catalyst for positive change in the American workforce by helping worksites make their employees’ health and well-being a priority.

“Our Wellness Team is excited to have accomplished so much in such a short time. Our class offerings have increased, our participation numbers have increased and wellness is something that our employees recognize and know about,” said Elise Robinson, Director of Human Resources – Exempt Employees.
