parent and student information

Below are the frequently asked questions about the College in the High School (CHS) program. If you have any additional questions, please email us at collegeinhs@everettcc.edu

Questions about program eligibility

Who can participate in CHS?

All high school students (9th-12th grade) who are currently taking a CHS-eligible class at their high school may register. Each high school has a list of what classes are eligible and students should check with their teacher or counselor prior to registering.

Do I need to apply to EvCC to participate in CHS?

Yes, if you do not have an EvCC student ID you will need to apply, visit our Application and Registration Information page for steps on applying. If you already have an ID you will not need to re-apply.

If I have an IEP can I participate in a CHS course?

Yes. Students with an IEP should work with their IEP team and high school counselor to determine readiness for specific CHS courses and whether there is potential for course modifications, as needed. Please note that a Pass or Fail grade is NOT an option for this program.

As a CHS student do I have access to services at the college?

Yes, you are considered an EvCC student and have access to our tutoring center, writing centerlibrary, advising (see advising section for more information), and student support services as well as other resources.

Questions about the application

What type of placement is required?

As a CHS student, you are not required to take placement tests with EvCC. CHS classes do, however, require that students have met the same prerequisites and/or placement test scores that all students of EvCC must meet. High school teachers are responsible for ensuring that students are meeting these standards. Students should see their teachers for more information.

Can I register for CHS and be registered for other dual credit programs?

Yes, you may have both CHS-eligible classes and CTE Dual Credit-eligible classes at your high school. In addition, you may take a combination of these classes as well as Running Start. CHS students need to follow the application process for each individual program. For more information, visit our High School Dual Credit Programs page.

Do I need to provide my Social Security Number?

Providing the SSN is optional. Undocumented students can participate in the CHS program and other dual credit programs in Washington. Students who do not provide their social security number will not be able to receive a 1098T tuition statement.

Questions about quarters, credits, and grades

Which EvCC quarters can I participate in CHS?

As a CHS student, you may be registered in EvCC’s Winter and Spring quarters. Students who are taking classes that are year-long or first semester at the high school will be registered in EvCC’s Winter quarter. For second semester classes students will register in Spring.

Which high school classes are eligible for CHS?

A class is CHS eligible if the high school has partnered with EvCC and the teacher and class curriculum have met the CHS standards. Each teacher works with an EvCC faculty mentor to ensure the work the students perform in the high school course is equivalent to an EvCC course. CHS classes offered vary by high school.

How many credits are CHS classes worth?

Most courses are 5 college credits; year-long courses can range between 10-15 college credits.

How are grades determined for CHS courses?

The final college grades earned follow EvCC’s grading practices and policies, which include the grading scale and grade options. This means that Grades awarded for the college credit can be different from the grade the student is awarded by the high school. Grades for year-long CHS classes will be the average of the student's two semesters in high school.

CHS courses that students have registered for will be on both the student’s high school transcript and their college transcript. Students must complete the class at the high school to earn credit, partial credit cannot be awarded.

What grade do I need to earn in high school to be eligible for CHS credit?

Once registered, your grades will go on your EvCC transcript regardless of what you earn. However, CHS only guarantees earning college credit if a minimum of 2.0/C is earned. The high school teacher must follow the EvCC grading scale. This may be slightly different from the high school grading scale resulting in a different college grade from the high school grade. Full-year class grades are an average of the two-semester grades. A Pass or Fail grade is NOT available for students on a 501, 504, or IEP plan for this program.

Can I get both AP and CHS credit?

Yes, you can participate in both programs. However, the university or higher education institution you are transferring your college credit will only accept one. Some high school courses are offered as both Advanced Placement (AP) and CHS options. Talk with your High School counselor or teacher for more information on the AP test.

If I am in a CHS-eligible course but do not choose to pay the college’s fee for the college credit, does my high school transcript still show the college course name and the CHS (“C”) course designator?

Yes. Any student who enrolls in a CHS course, even if they do not register with the college to earn college credit, will have the college course title and “C” course designator on their high school transcript. The student will earn a grade for the high school course but the course will not appear on the college transcript.

Who advises CHS students?

CHS students are encouraged to work with both their high school counselor and EvCC advisors. Advisors can help students understand how a course will apply towards a desired degree.

Does the CHS office provide updates to parents about a student's academic progress or information?

Once a high school student enters the CHS program, they have the same rights and responsibilities as any other college student. All student educational records are handled in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). For full rights visit the Confidentiality/FERPA page. We do not release information to parents about a student’s account without a release form, but we do communicate with high school counselors and school district registrars about a student’s academic record, classes, and grades. Students may fill out a FERPA information release form if they wish to have their information shared with a specific person or people.

Questions about deadlines

Does EvCC impose a registration deadline for CHS?

Yes, you are responsible for registering on or before the deadline set by EvCC. Note that retroactive registration –students registering for college credit after the college course is over – is prohibited. Please go here to view the current registration deadlines.

What are the costs of the program?

Starting 2023-2024, College in the High School classes are free for public high school students. Private high school students are required to pay a fee. The fee is $220 per 5-credit class. Private high school students will need to complete registration to earn credit and have their tuition paid.
