Benefits of College in the High School (CHS)

  • Advancing Educational Goals - You can accelerate your postsecondary studies by experiencing and earning college credit at your high school.
  • Academic Rigor - College credit is awarded based on the successful completion of a dual credit college course rather than a test. Completion of rigorous coursework and earning college credit may make a student’s university or college application stronger. Courses are taught by high school faculty who have been approved and trained by EvCC faculty.
  • College Credit - Most CHS courses fulfill general education requirements at community college colleges and universities. Credit earned through CHS is transferable to all public community colleges, public universities, and most private institutions in Washington state. Upon completion of registered CHS courses, grades earned are recorded on the official EvCC transcript under the college course title and number. Students should always contact prospective colleges and universities to understand if and how CHS credits will transfer.
  • Significant Savings - CHS courses are free for public high school students. For private high school students, courses are typically 60% less than an equivalent EvCC course.
  • Access to College Services - You can have access to EvCC services while enrolled in CHS courses.

Things to Consider

Dual credit programs offer high school students the opportunity to earn college credit to save on future tuition costs and get a head start on educational and career goals. Below are three major aspects to consider before earning college credit.

College Transcript

College transcripts are permanent and grades cannot be erased. Grades earned in a dual credit program will count toward a student’s college Grade Point Average (GPA) and Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for enrollment and financial aid purposes. Additionally, you will need to provide proof of college education attainment at most other higher education institutions and some employment opportunities.

Financial Aid Impact

Any attempted credits, including credit attempted by high school students through a dual credit program (CTE Dual Credit, College in the High School, Running Start), on a college transcript could impact your financial aid eligibility. It may affect the length of time a student can receive state and federal financial aid. Grades earned in a dual credit program will count toward a student’s college Grade Point Average (GPA) and Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for enrollment and financial aid purposes.

FERPA

Dual credit students enrolled in dual credit programs (CTE Dual Credit, College in the High School, Running Start) are considered regular college students and are protected by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). It is a federal law that protects student information and puts the ownership of a student’s higher education academic records and account information on the student regardless of age. Parents and family members do not have access to students’ grades, class schedules, and other protected information. A student may choose to release or not release information to individuals via a form

Student Support Services

Outreach and High School Programs | Support with dual credit program questions, registration, and support for students.

Advising Center | Support with advising on course selection, meeting program requirements, and general transfer information. Advisors can help students understand how a course will apply towards a degree.

Cashiers Office | Support with paying fees, setting up Tuition Payment Plans, and third-party payments.

Center for Disability Services | Provides academic accommodations in EvCC classrooms and testing centers. CHS students are considered college students. College students with disabilities are responsible for meeting the same standards as those without disabilities. Accommodations provide access but do not modify the fundamental standards of the courses or programs and do not provide services that high school students may be used to such as individualized attention, coaching or helping students plan their work. Some of those types of services may be available via other college services, like the Tutoring Center or the Counseling and Student Success office. College grades reflect the quality of work submitted, grading standards are not modified. If students are on a 504 or IEP plan, please note that a Pass or Fall grade is not an option for the CHS program. This Center for Disability Services video discusses the most significant differences between accommodations, modifications, and services between the K-12 and Higher Education systems.

Counseling & Student Success | Support from professional counselors for Career Counseling, Academic Counseling, Advising, and free short-term personal counseling.

Enrollment Services | Assistance with ordering transcripts and updating grades.

Food Pantry | Free service to individuals experiencing food insecurity. Individuals can obtain non-perishable food items and limited hygiene products, school supplies, and kitchen utensils.

Library Media Center | Access to library books, DVDs, computers, printers, and study spaces. Students are able to fully access resources with an EvCC student ID card.

Tutoring Center | Academic support to students registered in general and CHS courses.

Writing Center | Peer support for students on all types of writing projects including coursework, personal writing, application essays, resumes, and cover letters. The Writing Center operates at the start of the college's first week of the quarter, which differs from the high school semester system.

College and Program Policies

Student Rights, Responsibility, and Policies

College in the High School students have the same expectation of behavior as any other student attending EvCC. It is the responsibility of the student to be familiar with these policies and procedures.

Everett Community College follows a number of guidelines that support a civil and respectful environment and provide procedures to assure fair treatment. EvCC Student LIFE provides the Student Rights & Responsibilities annually, which outlines many of the policies and procedures that support student conduct and institutional responsibilities.

Grades

CHS teachers must follow the EvCC grading scale. This may be slightly different from the high school grading scale resulting in a different college grade from the high school grade. Full-year class grades are an average of the two-semester grades. A Pass or Fail is not available for students on a 504 or IEP high school accommodations plan for the CHS program.

Registration Deadline Policies

Students are responsible for following the program’s registration, withdrawal, and payment deadlines. Only the student can request a withdrawal or refund. Retroactive registration is not allowed. Deadlines can be found on our CHS Registration Information page.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Students must receive a minimum quarterly grade point average of 2.0 to maintain satisfactory academic progress at the college. Students must also satisfy any additional grade point requirements specified in the curriculum guide for the degree being sought. EvCC CHS students intending to take classes at EvCC through Running Start or post-high school graduation will have their CHS grades count towards satisfactory academic progress.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

FERPA provides students with certain rights with respect to their education records. These rights, as they pertain to the CHS program, do not permit college staff to disclose or discuss students’ records with anyone, including parents and guardians, other than the student. When inquiring about student records the student must make the inquiry.
