EvCC Named Best College in The Herald Readers' Choice Awards

EvCC was voted best college by readers of The Herald in the 2014 Readers' Choice Awards. Over 17,000 readers voted in the poll.

Student Journalists Win State Awards

Student journalists reporting for EvCC's student media organization, The Clipper, were honored with awards from the Washington Press Association and the Washington Community College Journalism Association in May 2014.

The Clipper earned 13 WPA awards. The college's big winner was Jake Nicholls, who took home four awards - including first place awards in both student news and student features. Meagan Baron received the college's other first-place honor in the student news consumer affairs category.

Five students earned a total of four honors from the annual WCCJA competition.

Goodwill Industries Names EvCC an Outstanding Community Partner

Seattle Goodwill Industries honored Everett Community College as an outstanding community partner (nonprofit) for assistance with Goodwill’s new Marysville Youth Aerospace Program in February 2014.

EvCC supported the development of the program, including creating a pre-employment course and offering tours and demonstrations to youth participants.

Students Selected for NASA Internships

EvCC mechanical engineering student Amy Felt returned to Kennedy Space Center in the summer of 2014 for her second internship with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Felt, 22, of Mount Vernon, was one of thousands of applicants for a limited number of summer internship positions. During her first internship, NASA engineers asked Felt where she was earning her master's degree.

"I told them I was finishing my second year of college," she said. "Most people were surprised I went to a community college."

EvCC aerospace engineering student Rachael Humberg completed a 15-week internship at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center in California in 2007. Humberg, 20, of Lake Stevens, was paired with a NASA mentor, and her internship included hypersonic missile testbed support, sonic boom investigations and data analysis, and blended wing body flight support and data analysis.

EvCC Hosts Region's Only Students of Color Career Conference

Everett Community College hosts the region's annual Snohomish County Students of Color Career Conference for middle and high school students to learn about higher education and career options.

Local professionals of color representing more than 20 career fields talk with students every January about career options and encourage them to continue their education. Students can select up to three career panels, attend the career and education fair, and pick up information about college admission and financial aid. Scholarships are also awarded.

EvCC Administrative Assistant Carol Thompkins Receives State Exemplary Staff Award

EvCC administrative assistant Carol Tompkins received the Washington state Staff Training for Technical and Community Colleges exemplary staff award in August 2013.

Tompkins, of Marysville, who works for the college’s Health Sciences and Public Safety division supporting eight programs and more than 100 faculty and staff, earned the award for Region C, which includes seven community and technical colleges.

Student Athletes: Baseball Team Wins 2013 Championship

The EvCC Trojans won the 2013 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Championship Title with their 4-1 win over the Pierce College Raiders in May 2013. The team finished the season with a 39-9 overall record.

This was Everett's first baseball title since 1967. The program was brought to life under the leadership of Coach Levi Lacey starting in 2002, after a 20-year hiatus for the program.

Center of Excellence Director Receives Exemplary Leadership Award

Washington State Center of Excellence for Aerospace and Advanced Materials Manufacturing Executive Director Mary Kaye Bredeson received The Chair Academy’s 2013 Idahlynn Karre Exemplary Leadership award.

She was selected for the award for her ability to advance academic and administrative leadership.

The Center, located at Everett Community College, is a one-stop resource center for education and industry in the state of Washington. The center is working with community and technical colleges across the state to share curriculum, align education with industry training needs and develop partnerships to support aerospace and manufacturing education.

Lindsay Hudson Receives Patriot Award from U.S. Department of Defense

EvCC Student Activities Adviser Lindsay Hudson received the U.S. Department of Defense’s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award in October 2012 for her support for student veterans and active duty military service members.

“Lindsay’s strong and unrelenting support is why I’m able to serve as a reservist and get a college education,” said U.S. Navy Reserve Chief Petty Officer Stephanie Anderson, who nominated Hudson for the award.

Anderson, who is a student employee in the college’s Student Activities Office, thanked Hudson for helping her manage a demanding work, school and military training schedule.

Two Instructors Receive Humanities Association Awards

EvCC communications instructor Lori Widsom-Whitley won an exemplary status award from the Washington Community Colleges Humanities Association in October 2012. Art instructor Thom Lee won the same award in 2011.

Wisdom-Whitley, of Tulalip, has coordinated EvCC's Tuesday Travelogue series since 2008 through the college's Humanities Center. The lunchtime talks by EvCC faculty, staff, student organizations and international students give listeners a way of traveling around the world through observations and photos.

In his visual arts class, Lee uses perspectives and information from science, math, music and literature. He also brings Humanities to other classes, such as co-teaching a calculus class. In that class, Lee used a potter's wheel to assist students in visualizing solids of revolution.

EvCC Grounds Crew Wins Award

Everett Community College won a Monte Cristo Award for Neighborhood Friendly Business from the city of Everett in 2011 for its attractive and well maintained campus. The annual awards recognize those who make the city a special place to live through their extensive efforts to make their homes or businesses attractive and keep them well maintained, according to the city.

Credit for the award goes to members of the EvCC grounds crew, who work hard to make our campus beautiful.

Student Athletes: Baseball Players Drafted to the Major Leagues

Thirteen EvCC alumni have been selected in the Major League Baseball draft since 2005.

Zach Simons was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 2003 right out of high school, but he choose to go to college instead and played at EvCC. He helped rebuild the college's baseball legacy in 2004 and 2005 after EvCC restarted the program in 2002 after a 20-year hiatus.

The Colorado Rockies drafted Simons in 2005, and he spent seven years playing professionally. In 2014, Simons was named to EvCC's Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame.

Aaron Cunningham was the first player in college history to make it to the major leagues, playing in his first game Aug. 31, 2008 as an outfielder for the Oakland Athletics. Cunningham graduated from South Kitsap High School and played at EvCC in the 2004-05 season.

Engineering Instructor Eric Davishahl Named Best in the Northwest

Everett Community College engineering instructor Eric Davishahl received the American Society for Engineering Education's 2008 Outstanding Teaching Award for the Pacific Northwest section of ASEE. Davishahl is the first community college instructor in the region to receive this award.

The award committee applauded Davishahl's outstanding teaching, curriculum development, advising and educational scholarship, noting his leadership for engineering initiatives in Washington state.
