Hyflex Principles

Hyflex Principles is a workshop designed to certify instructors for teaching intentional hyflex courses*. You will be supported as you think through the logistics of teaching hyflex equitably and give you practice with the equipment and classroom strategies. You must also be certified to teach online courses at EvCC to receive certification to teach hyflex courses.

The workshop is mostly asynchronous but includes a required lab component in which the instructor conducts a lesson from a hyflex classroom. The workshop takes an average of 15 hours to complete and comes with a $750 stipend.

Instructors interested in making their livestream classes more interactive are also welcome to take this workshop and conduct their lessons from home if they aren’t interested in hyflex certification.

*What is hyflex?

Hyflex is a course modality designed for maximum flexibility. On the spectrum from completely online to completely face-to-face, this class exists between online and hybrid and is designed to accommodate split classes, students’ unpredictable schedules, and semi-predictable disruptions in service (such as school closures due to weather or pandemic) while still providing the opportunity for face-to-face instruction using a flipped classroom model. It is essentially an online course with an optional face-to-face component.

Course Checkup

Do you want to improve your Canvas course but don't know where to begin? Do you want to increase student engagement and minimize frustration? The EvCC eLearning team is happy to take a quick look at one of your courses and give you feedback.

Simply request a Course Design Checkup.

Depending on your areas of concern, we can check your syllabus, course navigation, assignments, gradebook, and general accessibility. We'll tell you three things you are doing well AND suggest three quick changes you can make that will reduce barriers to student success, INCLUDING links to resources to help you make those changes. It’s like giving your course a Tune-up.We’re also available to observe live lessons and give you feedback about the student experience: face-to-face, livestream, and hyflex.

Introduction to Open Pedagogy

During this five-week online course, faculty will discover various open pedagogy instruction strategies that go beyond basic OER adoption and learn about teaching methods that have students create, revise and remix their class materials. Faculty will also be able to explore how open pedagogy practice challenges traditional teaching roles and has the power to transform the educational experience for both teachers and students.

Learning outcomes:

  • Examine the relationship between effective course design ideas and basic Open Education Resource integration strategies.
  • Describe the major attributes  of open pedagogy based on readings and perspectives from experts in the field.
  • Explore approaches for student ownership of course content and engagement as it aligns with open pedagogy practices.
  • Design and develop learning activities to be learner-centered and aligned with the various attributes of open pedagogy.
