Security & Emergency Management Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question about security, safety or emergency management that is not answered here, visit Campus Safety, Security & Emergency Management’s webpage, or email security@everettcc.edu.

Basics

If I need help from Security, which phone number do I call?

You can reach Security 24/7 by calling 425-388-9998. You are also able to call the front office during hours of operation at 425-388-9990. If you call either number on evenings or weekends, you will reach the on-duty security officer.

There are 11 blue assistance phones located around the north Everett campus. When the button is pushed, it calls the on-duty security officer. We will install additional blue light assistant phone fixtures at the new Cascade Learning Resource Center.

How many security guards are on campus?

EvCC has eight security guards plus a director, assistant director of security, assistant director of emergency management, office manager and student workers. Typically there are two security guards on duty 24/7. The guards are on duty at the north Everett campus on evenings and weekends and two guards plus office staff are on duty weekdays. Security also checks on our satellite locations.

We are in the process of hiring a security officer and a director to fill vacancies. We have also submitted a budget request to expand our security staff in 2023-24, subject to favorable fiscal conditions.

We collaborate with the Everett Police Department, which also patrols the north Everertt campus.

Training, Drills and Emergency Preparation

What can I do to prepare for an emergency at EvCC?

  1. Make sure you’re signed up for emergency alerts via text message and email.

  2. Participate in drills. We practice lockdown, evacuation and earthquake drills in each EvCC building and satellite location. We share announcements about these in Student 411 (sent to student emails) and Daily Digest (sent to employee emails).
  1. Become familiar with EvCC’s emergency response plans. This explains what you should do in an emergency. EvCC’s Emergency Management Office is working on updating these plans.

How does EvCC train students and employees about what to do in an emergency?

In addition to regular drills, security provides training to new faculty, staff, and students through orientations, department training, committee meetings, and guest speakers. Our emergency procedures are posted on our website

Security can provide training in classes if invited by instructors. To request training in classes, instructors can email security@everettcc.edu.

What do building captains and floor wardens do, and who are they?

Security assigns volunteer building captains and floor wardens for each EvCC building and satellite location. They are responsible for the safety of individuals and property in their assigned areas. As safety representatives, they are the first point of contact for safety information and incident reporting for all building occupants.

Each building captain and floor warden assists with preparation and response activities such as managing evacuations and assisting those with functional and access needs, participate in drills and exercises, coordinate emergency operations, and assist with monitoring emergency response supplies. To learn more about who your building captain and floor wardens are and their contact information, please check the EvCC Building Captain & Floor Warden Roster.

Communications

How does EvCC communicate during an emergency?

If EvCC is closing during regular business hours or experiencing an emergency, information will be posted on an opening screen of the EvCC website, sent via text message for subscribers, emailed to students, faculty, and staff EvCC email accounts, and a message will be posted on the college's main phone line at 425-388-9100.

For some emergencies, we use the Informacast system to put out audio alerts on campus loudspeakers and phones.

Why didn’t I get the alert?

Make sure you’re signed up for emergency alerts via text message and email.
If you did not get an emergency alert when it says you are signed up, your cell phone may think the alert message is spam. Please visit EverettCC.edu/Emergency and check the instructions for your phone operating system. If you continue to have issues, please contact the TechHUB at 425-388-9333 or techhub@everettcc.edu

How do we communicate emergency information with people who are deaf or hard of hearing?

We recommend everyone sign up for text message emergency alerts at EverettCC.edu/Emergency

For those on campus, there are readerboards that display a text version of pre-recorded audio emergency messages in Parks Student Union (library, near Enrollment Services, near the bookstore, near the Diversity and Equity Center) and Gray Wolf Hall. These text messages also display on campus phones.

If we need to share a live audio message, that information will not be displayed as text on the readerboards or phones.

Lockdowns

What do I do in a lockdown?

If there is a serious risk of danger at any Everett Community College location, the college may go into a lockdown to protect students, faculty, staff and visitors from harm. When nearby Whittier or Hawthorne elementary schools go on lockdown, EvCC and WSU-Everett will lockdown out of caution. When there is police acticity in the area, we assess the situation to determine whether a lockdown is necessary.

If you are at an EvCC location or WSU-Everett when you receive a lockdown message, close and lock all doors, turn off lights, and remain quiet. If you’re outside, take cover or leave campus, if it is safe to do so; you will not be able to enter any buildings.

If you are not at an EvCC location when you receive a lockdown message, don’t come to campus.

If we are ever in a situation where there is an assailant on campus, we practice Run, Hide, Fight.

In a lockdown, can I open the exterior door to let in people who are stuck outside?

Do not open doors after a lockdown has been put into place, as this could worsen the situation. If you are outside during a lockdown, find a place to hide.

During a lockdown, what do I do if there is a fire or medical emergency?

The doors are always unlocked from the inside so you can leave.

During a lockdown, what should people in common areas like lobbies, hallways, restrooms and open study spaces do?

Everyone should be prepared to RUN, HIDE, FIGHT.

Before locking interior doors, instructors, building captains, and floor wardens should clear nearby common areas/restrooms and encourage those to secure themselves in a lockable area. All doors into the area should be locked or wedged shut. It may be necessary to barricade the  doors with furnishings. Close windows and shades. Turn off lights to make it appear that the room is unoccupied. Move people to the safest point in the room, away from windows and doors and ask them to remain quiet and to stay low if danger is suspected nearby.

During a lockdown, do EvCC satellite locations like Cosmetology and ORCA and WSU-Everett need to lockdown?

For most events, all campus EvCC and WSU-Everett will lockdown out of caution. We do not always know the specific location of the threat. Please do not call Security to ask if your location is still in lockdown.

We will do our best to lift the lockdown as soon as possible and use RAVE (text message, email, website) and Informacast (loudspeakers, campus phones, text readerboards) to send updates and all-clear messages.

Who is responsible for unlocking buildings after a lockdown is over?

The buildings can be unlocked remotely by security officers by a phone application or in person by officers and building captains.

Any activated lockdown buttons will need to be reset in order to fully put the system back online and unlock the doors. Campus Safety and Security and Emergency Management will ensure all lockdown buttons are reset, make sure doors are operating normally, and communicate with the company that monitors the lockdown system.
